Cost to Install Commercial AC Unit
Quote and Estimate
Cost vary depending on the size of your business and what brand you purchase, which means your price could hit five figures or more than expected. Given the number of variables that affect the price, your costs could be much higher or lower depending on your needs.
Variations to Install Commercial AC Unit
The following are some of the most important factors to consider before deciding which AC is right for your business:
Single and multi-split constant air-volume (CAV) systems are some of the most common types of commercial AC units. They feature an outdoor compressor and an indoor blower, and they are most useful in smaller business with relatively few rooms to cool. Variable air volume (VAV) systems modify the amount of air they move based on the current temperature, making them more efficient than CAV systems. Variable refrigerant volume (VRV) systems include a coolant in their blowers and allow you to heat and cool individual rooms as needed.
Each AC brand offers a different set of features, and you may find one is better suited to your needs and budget than another. GALVEZ AIR CONDITIONING & REFRIGERATION INC offers efficiency and some of the highest levels in the industry through their products, depend of the brand you choice, we will always advise you on the best product for your business, making this a good choice if you’re trying to cut down on expenses. Top-of-the-line brands like American Standard and Carrier are known for their reliability and value but can be expensive. Some brands like Heil offer high-tech features that offer granular control, while others like York are known for their relative simplicity and reliability.
The size of your building is one of the most important factors to consider when choosing an AC unit. If your AC is over or underpowered, it may have difficulty keeping a stable temperature in your building. Even worse, it might start and stop frequently, which increases wear and tear on your AC and can shorten its lifespan. Assuming each room in your building is 8 feet tall, you can estimate its cooling needs by dividing your building’s square footage by 500, then multiplying this number by 12,000 to determine how many BTUs your AC should move.
Labor costs can vary widely from time and complexity about the project, but a lower price might not be all it seems. GALVEZ AIR CONDITIONING & REFRIGERATION INC include costs for insurance or other factors in the price they quote you for labor we have the support and references that our clients give us.
Every type of business will need different cooling needs, making this an important factor when considering when looking for an AC unit. For instance, a restaurant might need more cooling than a small office, while a warehouse might need far more than both while using an entirely different kind of cooling system. What your business does, how many people work there, and what kinds of goods or services you offer can all play a role in determining your cooling needs. For instance, each window and kitchen contributes about 1-1,200 BTUs respectively and should be factored in when determining the tonnage of your AC.
The best way to minimize disruptions to your business and plan ahead for buying a new commercial AC unit is to speak with a qualified HVAC technician and get an estimate.
FAQs about Commercial AC Install
If you are replacing an HVAC unit, you’ll have dozens of options to choose from, but it can be hard to find the one best suited for your current and future needs. This can be especially challenging if you have to make a decision during an emergency, where every minute of downtime carries a significant cost. The right HVAC brand can save you thousands of dollars over its lifespan, but the wrong one could easily blow your budget due to inefficiency and repairs. Learning what some of the most popular brands have to offer can help you quickly pick the one that will bring you the most value.
Lennox is an industry leader in energy efficiency, with packaged rooftop units boasting a SEER rating of 23.5 and Solar Ready systems offering an effective efficiency of 34 SEER. This can be especially important if you have lots of space you need to cool in a hot climate, where energy prices can soar in the summer. Lennox units come at a premium compared to other brands, and their parts can take longer to acquire in the event of a breakdown. However, they are highly dependable and noted for their reliability, which can help offset these factors.
Trane units are renowned for their reliability and their excellent warranties, making them a popular HVAC choice among businesses. Their 10-year parts/labor warranty gives owners a level of protection that’s hard to find anywhere else, and their durable construction and advanced technologies hold up under heavy use. However, Trane units are more expensive than their competitors partially for this reason, and also generally carry higher installation costs due to their complexity. This added cost could be worth it if you need a high-performance unit for your building.
Carrier is one of the most popular and prestigious commercial HVAC brands, thanks in large part to the high quality of its products. Carrier builds its parts to exacting standards, which helps to improve the reliability and overall longevity of its HVAC units while minimizing the need for replacements. Carrier also sells them in a wide range of sizes, meaning many businesses or buildings can get options ideally suited to their needs. Buyers can also enjoy exceptional customer service, making it easier to navigate the myriad options available and to get the maintenance help when needed.
Ruud units are known to be long-lasting, reliable, and more affordable than many of their competitors, making them attractive for businesses with low-intensity needs. It’s also easy to get replacement parts for their units thanks to their public distribution centers, which can be a problem for some other models. However, they’re often not as sophisticated as some of their more expensive competitors and may use older technologies. This can save you money if you don’t need a high-performance HVAC unit but might cause problems if you do.
York is known for the high value it offers, as its units are generally less expensive than its competitors while delivering quality service. Part of the reason for this is York’s HVAC units tend to be simpler than many of their counterparts, which keeps construction and installation costs low. This has the added benefit of making them generally quieter than other brands, which can be vital if you’re concerned about noise. However, this also means that York units may lack some of the more advanced features you could find with some of their higher-end competitors.
If you’re looking for the newest technologies in your HVAC unit, Rheem could be the right brand for you. Rheem’s units can give you a higher level of control over your cooling system thanks to their onboard diagnostic system, and their sturdy construction makes them highly durable against the elements. Rheem also offers excellent warranties, which can make it easier to maintain your unit and more accessible to adopt the latest technologies for your building. However, Rheem units can be reasonably expensive given their capabilities, not all of which you may need.
Goodman HVAC units are a popular option among building owners looking to save money or who may not need to use their HVAC often. Goodman’s units are generally reliable, and they also offer excellent customer service, making it easy to get help in the event of a breakdown. However, they usually aren’t as efficient as some of their higher-end competitors and the quality may be less consistent overall. Goodman also does not cover the cost of labor in its warranties, which can leave you with a hefty bill if it needs to be serviced.
HVAC units are highly sophisticated pieces of machinery that need to be assembled on the spot, which means no two units, even of the same brand, will be alike. If any mistakes are made during installation, even a high-end unit could fail to heat or cool your building effectively. Ultimately, the company you choose to install your new HVAC unit could be just as important as the brand you select. You’ll want to make sure yours places a high priority on training and educating its personnel while delivering quality service so you can get the most value from your HVAC unit.
HVAC Tons Per Square Foot – Commercial:
A commercial building will have radically different HVAC needs than a residential one. They generally have higher roofs, greater foot traffic, and different insulation, which can radically alter calculations. There is much variation among commercial buildings as well as some require far more cooling needs than others. However, in many cases, one ton of air conditioning will remove about 12,000 BTUs from 500 square feet in an hour. You can use this to determine the cooling load of your building and the minimum size of your HVAC unit.
Commercial HVAC Sizing Rule of Thumb:
To determine your building’s cooling load, simply add up all of the sources of heat, then multiply that by the number of 500 square-foot areas you need cooled. Commercial buildings will likely have higher foot traffic than residential spaces, so add 380 BTUs to your calculation for every person who works inside a building. Every window facing sunlight will also add 1,000 BTUs to your estimates. Every additional kitchen in your building will add another 1,200 BTUs to your calculations.
In order to calculate how much air conditioning you will need, divide the square footage of your building by 500. Then, multiply this number by 12,000 BTUs, and then add to that number the additional heat generated by windows, workers or areas such as kitchens. This number will provide you with a good idea of the size of the air conditioner you will need. Some companies now divide square footage by 1,000, which can give you a range of values for your HVAC needs.
Commercial HVAC System Cost Per Square Foot:
Given the higher cooling needs of commercial buildings, commercial HVAC will have different costs than residential. You can expect to pay anywhere between 1.6 to 2 times more to cool a busy commercial space compared to a similarly sized residential area. This can increase dramatically if you run a business that generates lots of heat. If you run a small business, plan on paying about $3 to $4 per square foot for air conditioning, but larger business may pay up to $20 per square foot.
